Use the JxD Critical Sensitivity to Design Questions learning tool to consider the Leave Clearance Questions (located in the "Read" tab of the American Flag hyperobject). This learning tool helps students critically and patiently engage a source in order to think deeply about power, representation, and justice.

Have students respond to the following series of questions for two minutes each as a free write in their journals. Encourage students to write down their responses without concern for making it perfect – the focus is on content and thought generation, not grammar or sentence structure. After each section or after all the questions, ask students to share their insights.

First reading

Read through the excerpted Leave Clearance Questions and ask:

Extra online research is likely needed for this section.

  1. What is the context? When and where was this designed/made? What else was happening at that place and time?
  2. Who designed/made this? Why might that be important?

Second reading

Read through the excerpted Leave Clearance Questions again and ask:

  1. Whose perspectives are represented? Whose voices are the loudest? Why?
  2. Whose perspectives are not represented? Whose voices are the quietest—perhaps even silenced? Why?
  3. Whose voices and perspectives appear to be valued?

Third reading

Read through the excerpted Leave Clearance Questions for a third time and ask:

  1. Who was most obviously impacted by this document? Who was less obviously impacted by this document? Who, if anyone, had agency or choice?
  2. What kinds of power am I seeing? What evidence of the different types of power am I seeing?
  3. How am I involved? How do I participate?
  4. How can I participate more, or differently?
